@angular/material team has said that Material v2.0.0-beta.7 now supports server rendering. @angular/material is in version v5.0.0-rc.2 in the time of writing.

Closing for now since we're looking into 5.x transition this weekend and this next week. (Looking into what's missing in the AngularCompilerPlugin).
