The upgrade prepared by @Eng-Fouad unfortunately lead to test failures in MetaAnnotatedQueryMethodEclipseLinkIntegrationTests. Looks like EL runs into a stack overflow in the metadata handling. Stashing for now.

Is it safe to use eclipse link 4.0.2 with latest (as of today) release of spring data jpa 3.1.3?

I was searching the documentation for the supported eclipselink versions but could't find any reference. Only on github found the maven profile eclipselink-next, a jenkins task to test against eclipselink-next version and some issues related to it (like this one).

We usually do not upgrade dependencies to new major versions within release cycles. The existence of the build profile in combination with the fact that the builds are green seems to indicate that our build runs fine on recent 4.0 versions. I guess the only way to find out is by trying 4.0 with your project as our tests can only give a fundamental confidence but no exhaustive metric.
