The first PR that merges the code for the new Elasticsearch client. Using the new client is a purely optional thing. The implementation itself is not fully finished - there are still calls with the new client that are not yet implemented and at some places the Elasticsearch client still has issues.
But nevertheless we add the code to optionally interact with the new client, so it is available with the next release 4.4 M4, so we can make sure it does not break existing code and integrations.
And this does not set #1973 to closed as there is still some work to do.
