Does installing from source not using pip work? You might also try upgrading your version of distribute

Yes, that works.

It seems the pip install is not cythonizing the pyx files. I also read
something about setuptools while pip installing which doesn't play nicely
with cython in my experience.

I had the same problem while trying to install pandas with pip (I installed 0.8 now which works).
