This code is built on top of #496 to make the Travis CI build pass. #496 should be merged before this pull request.

I'm not confident we should drop Py2.6 and Py3.3 support if avoidable. Is it possible to address the underlying bug in a way that doesn't require we drop support for these versions?

For what it's worth, I expect we're very near a point where we need to do so, I'm just not confident we're at that point yet.

@jmadler Can we discuss that on #496? I’m not sure how else to get the CI build to pass.

Since it appears that Travis CI doesn't support them anymore
