@JustinGrote Give this a whirl, I think it provides the same improvements as #3619 but in a simpler manner.

I had several additional improvements but this was the big one, I can refine #3619 to be simpler afterwards.

I think the worst other thing is that in PSES, Restore is always run. Would love to have that fixed.
