Vanilla features

'watch a category' - Vanilla sends email or show popup notification if a discussion is added in a category watched by User or User is mentioned, eg.
'follow/unfollow' - User can follow/unfolllow a category
'bookmark' - User can create a bookmark for a discussion only

Maybe following categories better suits the requirement?

Yeah, we want to use the follow/unfollow functionality. Can we set this up by default for registered users to be following the default categories added for a challenge group please?
