MariaDB changed the return type for columns of type VARBINARY.
I reported this as https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/CONJ-987 and hopefully get a clarification, if this is intended or not.

Judging from a comment on CONJ-987 about necessary changes it seems they consider it a bug.
