Is there one already or is there any chance of getting a version.short_version like numpy/scipy or a version number for 'anal retentives' (see distutils.version.StrictVersion?). This obviously isn't high priority but it's nice.

ValueError: invalid version number '0.7.2.dev-81dcf10'
