MapLibre (https://github.com/maplibre/maplibre-gl-js) is the community-supported "drop-in" successor to Mapbox GL JS... worth looking at whether or not we should switch.

A great plan - especially since plotly is bound to mapbox 1.13.1, the last freely licenced version of mapbox, which is now over 2 years old. There is no clear upgrade path except to maplibre, given plotly's integration model of bundling the source code of mapbox into its distribution.
