Pandas version checks

  • I have checked that this issue has not already been reported.

  • I have confirmed this issue exists on the latest version of pandas.

  • I have confirmed this issue exists on the main branch of pandas.

Reproducible Example

The future_stack is very slow compared to the previous implementation:

import pandas as pd, numpy as np

df = pd.DataFrame(np.random.randn(5000, 5000))

%%time
df.stack(dropna=False)
# CPU times: user 49.4 ms, sys: 49.7 ms, total: 99.1 ms
# Wall time: 96 ms

%%time
df.stack(future_stack=True)
# CPU times: user 1.96 s, sys: 122 ms, total: 2.08 s
# Wall time: 2.08 s
