Among other things, #552 proposed an API for registering custom auth plugins.
While some of the changes in #552 have been implemented when we improved the auth handling (#807), the exported API is still missing.

An PR would just have to adapt the proposal in #552 to the current master branch.

See also #804 (setting the default auth plugin in the DSN).
