2023 Annual Report: SIG Contributor Experience

Current initiatives and Project Health

1. What work did the SIG do this year that should be highlighted?

   • Onboarded New Chairs & Technical Leads

   • GitHub Administration:

     • New members:
       • Onboarded 2 new GitHub Admins, and rotated 2 existing to Emeritus (1, 2)
       • Onboarded 3 "New Membership Coordinators", 1 active and promoted as approver and 2 dropped off.
     • Kubernetes GitHub Org Membership Audit & Cleanup
     • Updates to Kubernetes Org Membership Requirements
     • Onboarded SIG Etcd to Kubernetes GitHub Organisation & Prow (major thanks to @cblecker, @mrbobbytables)
     • Peribolos tool, extended to manage repo level permissions under GitHub teams

   • Events:

     • 3 successful Kubernetes contributors summits:
       • Europe, hosted in Amsterdam, Netherlands
       • China, hosted in Shanghai (special thanks to @pacoxu for leading the event)
       • North America, hosted in Chicago, Illinois

   • Mentoring:

     • 1 successful mentoring cohort:
       • Kustomize maintainer training cohort

   • Elections:

     • Kubernetes Steering Committee Elections, for the 2023 cycle
     • Facilitated Kubernetes Code of Conduct Committee Election, for the 2023 cycle

   • Contributor-comms:

     • Subproject name change: "Marketing Council" (earlier) -> "Contributor Communications" (Contributor Comms for short)
     • Got access to Kubernetes Linkedin account
     • Got access to Kubernetes X (earlier, Twitter) account – @kubernetesio
     • LWKD (Last Week in Kubernetes Development) group became part of contributor-comms, onboarded 3 new dedicated maintainers 1 2
     • 5 SIG spotlight blogs (2/5 contributed by new contributors)
       • Spotlight on SIG CLI
       • Spotlight on SIG Testing
       • Spotlight on SIG Architecture: Conformance
       • Spotlight on SIG Architecture: Production Readiness
       • Introducing SIG etcd
     • New leadership roles in subproject:
       • Onboarded 1 Comms Tech Lead
       • Onboarded 1 Social Media Coordinator shadow

   • Slack moderation:

     • Updates to Kubernetes core contributor slack channels - #kubernetes-new-contributors, #kubernetes-org-members

2. Are there any areas and/or subprojects that your group needs help with (e.g. fewer than 2 active OWNERS)?

   • Mentoring subproject needs a dedicated leadership, responsible for running both (i) group mentoring cohorts for Kubernetes SIGs & WGs, (ii) external mentoring programs (LFX Mentorship, Google Summer of Code, Google Summer of Docs, Outreachy, etc)

   • Elections subproject is in need of a lead (someone preferably with Python programming experience), who will own & maintain the election software, pick election officers, and help groups in the Kubernetes project who wants to use the election software.
